Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900) was Astronomer Royal for Scotland from 1846 – 1888. He realised that in order to use his telescopes effectively he needed to get away from the smog and light pollution of Edinburgh and get up above the clouds. In 1856, he organised an expedition to Tenerife, where he set up a temporary observatory at 3,300m. He published an account of the expedition, “Teneriffe, An Astronomer’s Experiment”, which was illustrated with 20 tipped-in stereoviews taken by Smyth. This was the first book ever to be illustrated stereoscopically and incidentally set an altitude record for photography.
