BALLANTINE, John (1825-1891), 23 Ayr Road, Cumnock
Ballantine (active 1858-1891) advertised extensions to his studio in 1859 and in April 1861 an advert in the Ayr Advertiser was offering stereoviews of Drumlanrig and Lanfine.

This view of Drumlanrig exists with two different label types, both of which we ascribe to Ballantine. We have an example of the latter style annotated “Ballantyne”. He produced a wide range of “Views of Ayrshire”, Views of Dumfries-shire” and “Views of Kirkcudbrightshire”, which can be considered his extended local region, including views of the forementioned Drumlanrig and Lanfine (the only ones we have ever seen of the latter). In my opinion, Style 1 looks earlier, however, Style 2 has been seen with a purchase date Jan 1859.
