The Stereoviews of James Valentine & Sons, Dundee, Scotland

These comments are a concise summary of an article “James Valentine of Dundee – Scotland’s Second Stereophotographer” published in Stereoworld journal.

James Valentine (1815 – 1879) was an early Scottish photographer and probably the second largest producer of stereoscopic views of Scotland after George Washington Wilson. He trained as a portrait painter before becoming an engraver, running an engraving, printing & stationery business from 100 Murraygate in Dundee from 1845 until 1858, when he moved to new premises at 23 High Street, Dundee.

It has been claimed that James was experimenting in photography shortly after its announcement in 1839. He travelled to Paris in the early 1850s to increase his photographic learning, evidently training with Auguste Belloc.

Back in Dundee, James Valentine started commercial photography in 1851. This marked the beginnings of a business that would become one of the largest photographic (and later postcard) publishing companies in the world, employing over 1,000 people in its heyday. The company was finally purchased by John Waddington Limited in 1963, who sold it to Hallmark Cards in 1980. Valentine and Sons’ operations in Dundee eventually ceased in 1994, having outlived GW Wilson’s business by almost a century.

Initially, Valentine focused on his portrait studio, advertising his ‘Photographic Portrait Rooms’ at the Murraygate premises from 1853 onwards. It is only later that he diversified into the landscapes and townscapes for which his company would become famous.

In July 1858, a Valentine advert in the Dundee Courier claimed, “A very large assortment of Stereoscopes and Stereoscope Slides always on hand”. In December 1858 he advertised again in the same newspaper, “I have just returned from London, where I have personally selected from the most celebrated makers a Large Stock of the Newest Stereoscopes and Slides, Plain, Coloured, Illuminated and Transparent, which are worthy of inspection, being the Largest and Most Varied Stock ever exhibited in Dundee”. The strong demand for stereoscopic views are likely to have encouraged him to take his own stereoscopic Scottish views. Various sources report that stereoviews represented his first venture into topographical photography.

Topographical prints started to become an increasing part of his business in the early 1860s. In August 1864, the British Journal of Photography reported favourably on Valentine’s large format (12×10 inch) views of Balmoral and Highland scenery. Queen Victoria was presented with an album of 20 of these views, which led to commissions for Valentine, both portraits and views.

Valentine received the Queen’s warrant in November 1868, allowing him to use the phrase “Photographer by appointment to the Queen”. This was a major marketing coup over his main rival, George Washington Wilson of Aberdeen, who, despite being a favourite photographer of Queen Victoria, did not receive an official royal warrant until 1873.

Several Valentine family members were implicated in the business. James was aided by his first son John (1841-1867), who developed tuberculosis and emigrated to the Americas in 1863. He took pre-prepared stereoscopic dry plates on his journey (see BJP Sept 1864). He became one of the earliest photographers of Hawaii.

Valentine’s eldest son by his second marriage, William Dobson Valentine (1844-1907), took a course in chemistry at the University of London in the early 1860s and apprenticed with Francis Frith at Reigate, Surrey. He returned to Dundee to join the family business around 1863 and probably helped further push it towards the style of topographical and stereoscopic photography that he had learned from Frith.

A third brother, George Dobson Valentine (1852-1890), also joined the enterprise, starting in portraiture. Because of poor health, he emigrated in 1884 to New Zealand, where he is recognised as an important early landscape photographer.

In 1878, with their father’s health failing, William and George became partners to take over the business, which became Valentine & Sons. The later history of the firm is well documented.

Valentine Stereoviews

First Series

There appear to be two distinct series of views. The first series, dating from the late 1850s, appears on a beige/brown card (see Figure 1.), sometimes imprinted with a blindstamp “J.VALENTINE, DUNDEE” on the front, below and in the middle of the images (see Figure 2,). There is usually a small paper label on the rear entitled “Scottish Scenery” with number and title of image and sometimes a quotation from Burns or Scott (see Figure 3.). The numbers and titles appear to be different from the main second series.

Figure 2. Valentine Blindstamp, c.1859

Figure 3. Valentine Stereoview Label Verso, c.1859

Main Series

The second, main series of Valentine stereoviews appears on yellow card. Photographs from Balmoral, numbered 194 – 202, which include images of Queen Victoria and members of her family, can be precisely dated to October 1868, with reference to the same images in the Royal Collection. We can therefore estimate that this series was launched in the mid 1860s, probably subsequent to William Dobson Valentine’s return from his training with Frith. This series appears with four main designs of card and label, all on yellow card stock. Sometimes the views have no title provided or the title is hand-written on the verso.

Style 1

Figure 4. 4 – Last Oak of Birnam (Style 1)

Figure 5. Label Style 1.

The earliest design is a plain light yellow card with verso a small white label with the number and title of the view and J. Valentine, Dundee. This label has been seen on views numbered up to 192 and would have been used up until 1868.

Style 2

Figure 6. 4 – Last Oak of Birnam (Style 2)

Figure 7. Label Style 2.

The second iteration is similar to the first, with sometimes brighter yellow card, but the label now also contains the phrase “Photographer to the Queen”. We can date this label to post 1868 when, in October, Valentine photographed the royal family at Balmoral and, in November, received his Royal warrant. The highest number seen with this label is 366. We estimate that this label could have been in use from 1868 until 1870/71.

Style 3

Figure 8. 4 – Last Oak of Birnam (Style 3)

The third iteration is to find printing on the front of the card in either red or black ink, stating “Scottish Scenery by James Valentine, Dundee, Photographer by Appointment to the Queen” and the number and title of the view under the image. The majority of stereoviews have this format. Cards with this format have been seen with a purchase date of 1872 and we estimate it was used from around 1870/71 to 1878.

Style 4

Figure 9. 234 – Silver Strand, Loch Katrine (Style 4)

Figure 10. Label Style 4.

The fourth iteration is to have the same text in red or black, but slightly larger photographs on the front and the removal of the title to the rear of the card, where it appears on a large grey label stating “Valentine & Sons, Photographs of Scotland” plus title. We can date this label to post 1878, when the firm James Valentine became Valentine & Sons.

Conclusion

The numbers and titles seem consistent and were used in all four styles. The examples above provide proof that this is the case for the first three styles, and it is also seen to be true of the fourth style. Therefore the style of the view is purely an indication of date of printing of the stereoview and does not necessarily provide information on the actual date when the photograph was taken.

It should also be noted that Valentine published scenic cartes-de-visite (cdvs) which, our observations suggest, were abstracted from his stereoviews and used the same numbering and titles.

This list was initially based on known views from various collections. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this research, including Ken Hall, Peter Blair, Denis Pellerin (Brian May Collection), Paula Fleming, Julie Gibb (National Museum of Scotland), Graham Wood and Alex Sinclair. Subsequent to helpful discussions with Andrew Cronshaw, copies of James Valentine catalogues from 1872, 1875, 1881 and 1883 were located at the Lamb Collection, Dundee Central Library. The catalogues were ordered geographically and this list is a numerically ordered summary (with a few minor typos corrected).

The catalogues give us additional information on the date of the views:
