Elmslie William Dallas was born 27 June 1809. In the 1861 census, he was listed as photographer living at Deanbank House, Edinburgh. He died at the same address on 26 January 1879.

In 1873, he advertised for sale carbon print photographs of Nasmyth’s portrait of Robert Burns in the National Gallery.

In August 1865 he photographed a series of 8 stereoviews of Bonally Tower and its gardens, residence of the late Lord Cockburn. The 3D quality of these views suggest that he was a practised practitioner of stereo-photography, however his name has not been seen on any other views of the Edinburgh area.
